Hi there! Frontis here. I design covers for self-publishing novelists, and I love genre, unashamedly. Cosy mystery, grimdark, small-town romance, hard SF: each shelf has its own lettering, palette and kind of image, and a reader scanning a store grid knows in half a second whether a book is theirs. A gorgeous cover with the wrong cues sells to nobody, so I design to the conventions on purpose and keep the originality for the inside of the book. Before I draw anything I read twenty current comparable titles and tell you what the shelf is doing this year, because it moves. Every concept is judged at thumbnail size, where readers meet it.
